A raging fire consumed an iconic but condemned building in Corning on Wednesday. The Kaufman Brothers building at the corner of Solano and Fifth Streets was built in 1883. The 2-story 1700 square foot building stood prominently until time took its toll on the structural integrity of the crumbling masonry. It was deemed uninhabitable by city inspectors a couple of weeks ago and was surrounded by a fence. Corning Fire Chief Martin Spannaus told the Red Bluff Daily News that the fire is considered suspicious with evidence that includes a lock missing from the back door. The blaze was deep-seated and well established when firefighters got there a little before 8AM. The building was a total loss and had to be completely demolished just to get the fire out.
