Highway 299 in Trinity County remains closed, but crews are hoping to have the highway open for the busy Thanksgiving weekend. The highway is completely blocked by a rock slide at Big French Creek near Big Bar. One-way traffic control had been in effect for months at a location where a persistent slide has had one lane blocked. That slide has gotten much more active and crews have been unable to clear the material fast enough as it continues to slide down the mountain. Contractor Steve Manning Inc. is focusing on a large section of rock that will require excavation with mechanical equipment. Crews are hoping to have moved enough of the slide to allow traffic through by next Wednesday the 23rd. Drivers to and from the coast are encouraged by Cal-Trans to use Highway 3 or 36, though they’re both such a long way around they can’t really be called detours. Cal-Trans video footage of the slide can be seen on our Facebook page.
