A number of legislative acts in recent years have decriminalized or reduced the penalties for various crimes. They include Proposition 47, Prop 57, AB109 and Prop 64. Anderson Police say that has left them at a loss for ways to deal with nuisance houses. That has led them to make more use of code enforcement as a tool. A recent example is a house on Tremonto Drive. Several arrests have been made there in the past year by the “Problem Oriented Policing Unit”, ranging from drug possession to stolen property and arrests have included members of Shasta County’s Most Wanted. Neighboring residents were making frequent complaints about the house, but there was little police could do other than regularly raiding the place. So they called code enforcement, which found multiple violations of code. On February 9th the house was tagged as uninhabitable. Now anyone caught in the house can be arrested for trespassing.
