A painter may have prevented disaster by stopping an arson fire before it grew too large Monday in East Redding. At around 10AM Ben Galasso was busy painting the exterior of Dana Veterinary Hospital at Old Alturas and Bradford when he noticed a woman sitting under a tree nearby in a field of dry grass. She seemed to be in an argument with herself, according to Galasso, and after she got up and walked away, smoke began to rise from the grass. Galasso sprung into action, using a bucket of water he was using to soak paintbrushes. He tried to contain the quickly spreading fire but soon ran out of water and had to get the attention of the employees inside the vet clinic to bring a hose and finish containment of the fire. It burned a spot about 30 by 40 feet, and was extinguished when Redding Firefighters arrived. The suspected arsonist was taken by Redding Police for a psychiatric evaluation. Galasso immediately went back to painting the building.
