Anybody who wants to know why they should wear a life vest while boating could ask the Mougeotte family. Sunday afternoon at around 2 O’clock Darrell Mougeotte was cruising the Sacramento Arm of Lake Shasta near Point Paul at around 20 miles an hour. He had his four family members in the boat, including a 2-year-old. When a larger sports craft boat passed by about a hundred feet away it made a huge wake. Darrell saw the wake coming and slowed the throttle of his boat, causing the bow of the low profile 16-foot Renault to dip down just in time for the wake, which came right over the bow, swamping the boat. Two follow-up waves were enough to sink the boat, leaving all 5 family members floating, because all of them were wearing life vests. Other boaters rescued them and placed them on a houseboat as their boat sunk 40 feet to the bottom.
