A Cottonwood man led the CHP on a two-county chase at very high speeds and at times on the wrong side of the freeway. It started early Monday morning in Red Bluff, where police saw a stolen 2014 GMC Sierra pickup being driven recklessly on Highway 99. They tried to pull it over but the driver headed north from Adobe Road, so the Highway Patrol was requested. CHP officers caught up to the pickup just south of Hooker Creek Road as it was going 120 MPH. The driver exited at Hooker Creek Road and went westbound, crossing double yellow lines into opposing lanes at 70 to 95 MPH. When it was almost to Bowman Road a Tehama County Sheriff’s Deputy laid out a spike strip, which successfully flattened the right front tire. That wasn’t enough to stop this driver, though. He headed east on Bowman at 90 MPH, then went north on southbound Interstate Five. It was going between 50 and 70 MPH with a flat tire while dodging oncoming traffic. Three CHP officers had to swerve away when the pickup came straight at them. At the Main Street exit, the driver made a u-turn and left the freeway. After making several circles on a side street the truck became disabled at Fourth and Main. The driver still refused to get out and kept trying to move the truck. Officers smashed the windows out and removed him forcibly. 39-year-old Yu Sung Chin was booked into Tehama County Jail. The truck was stolen and Chin had an active warrant in Shasta County for vehicle theft.
