Shasta Joins Multi-County Lawsuit Against Prescription Drugs Makers

A massive multi-party lawsuit has been filed against some the biggest pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors by a consortium of 30 California counties, including Shasta. The civil suit was filed Wednesday in federal court by a team of private law firms against the makers of Oxycontin, Percoset, Norco and several other Opioid-based drugs. The suit claims the manufacturers have misled doctors about the addictiveness and efficacy of the pain killers. The suit also names the nation’s three largest distributors, who are blamed for failing to monitor suspiciously large and frequent Opioid shipments to pharmacies. Large retail pharmacies are also being sued, including CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens and Wal-Mart, for failing to stem the flow of Opioids into communities. The county wants to recoup taxpayer money spent providing resources in response to the crisis. The California consortium of 30 counties is expected to be transferred by the courts into a multi-district litigation in Ohio, which includes more than 500 counties and cities across the country.
