A young Chico girl suffered critical injuries in a 5-vehicle crash on Highway 99 between Corning and Chico Thursday morning. A trucker from British Columbia driving a 3 axle truck was southbound on 99 south of Tecate Lane. He was in the fast lane and 33-year-old Megann Pitts was driving a Nissan Altima in the slow lane. She was starting to pass the truck on the right when he moved over, apparently not seeing the Nissan. Pitts’s car was struck, causing her to lose control and slide sideways in front of the truck before crossing into the northbound side of the highway and getting hit by a tractor-trailer driven by a Redding woman. That pushed the Nissan back into the southbound lanes again, where it was hit by a Honda Accord driven by 54-year-old Patricia White of Corning. A wheel came loose from the Nissan and hit a Hyundai Driven by a Red Bluff man. White had minor pain to her neck and back. Pitts sustained just minor injuries to her left arm, but the 6-year-old riding with her suffered a broken pelvis, a broken leg and a head injury. She was flown to U.C. Davis in critical condition. Nobody else was injured.
