Man Pleads Guilty To Starting Siskiyou County Wildfire

A San Francisco man has admitted to starting last year’s Klamathon Fire that ripped through Hornbrook. 32-year-old John Colin Eagle Skoda entered guilty pleas on all counts Thursday. He faces a six year prison sentence. Skoda started the fire accidentally by burning debris recklessly on a hot and windy day on July 5th of last year. The fire moved quickly and erratically through more than 38,000 acres, destroying 35 homes and 48 other structures. Three firefighters were injured and one man was killed. 72-year-old John Karl Bermel was overcome by flames near his home. Skoda has been cooperative throughout the investigation. He was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter, but that was dropped as part of the plea deal.
