Saturday afternoon a small SUV burned up in the parking lot of the Park West Apartments off Dana Drive right behind Wal-Mart. The vehicle put off a large dark plume of smoke that made the fire look bigger than it was, caused by the large amount of plastic and vinyl in the interior as well as some magnesium wheels, according to Redding Fire Battalion Chief Chris Varnum. Someone had been working on the Buick Rendezvous when it caught fire. It was a total loss and the heat also damaged a Ford Taurus parked nearby. A number of spectators arrived and jammed up the single entrance to the sprawling complex. Varnum says that the lookyloos interfered with and slowed the responding fire engines, and if the apartments had actually been on fire, they would have blocked the escaping residents.
