A search resumed Monday morning for a man who apparently drowned in Lake Shasta. At around 3:30PM Sunday, Travis Palatvong of Redding, Sonthorn Wutthikan of Sacramento, Timothy Tran of Castro Valley and a fourth person, described only as a Vietnamese-American male, were fishing from a boat when they ran out of gas at the mouth of Packers Bay. After floating for a while they were getting hot, so Palatvong and Wutthikhan jumped in for a swim. Tran stayed in the boat but a few minutes later the other man jumped in the water. Palatvong could see he was struggling to swim and tried to help him but he pushed Palatvong away. Palatvong yelled for help and Tran threw a life jacket and a rope to him, so he started swimming back to give it to the struggling man. Meanwhile Wutthikhan swam over and grabbed ahold of him but the man kept fighting him and Wutthikhan lost his grip. The unidentified man slipped underwater and did not resurface. Efforts to recover him have so far been unsuccessful.
