A man shot by a Shasta County Sheriff’s Sergeant last week was a Marine Corps veteran who suffered the affects of PTSD after serving in Iraq. That’s according to a GoFundMe page posted by the family of 41-year-old Thomas Barbosa. They’re seeking $7000 for Barbosa’s funeral expenses, which they say will be partly but not fully covered by military benefits. Redding Police say Barbosa had been the subject of numerous mental health related welfare checks and had a history of being suicidal. Last Tuesday a woman called 9-1-1 from Cottonwood to report that Barbosa was acting irrationally. She said she was taking her children and leaving, but Barbosa was following them. Deputies had her meet them at the Auction Yard, and when Barbosa saw the deputies he fled. Deputies chased him until a CHP helicopter took over, tracking him until he drove over the edge of a cliff off Platina Road. The truck tumbled and came to rest against a large tree. Deputies arrived and climbed down the cliff to find Barbosa had a large knife, which he refused to drop. He was killed with a single round from a .223 caliber rifle. On the GoFundMe posting, Barbosa’s family says they have many questions but first they want Tom to be at peace.
