Crews Battle Massive Fires In Lassen County

There were reports Monday that the Hog Fire about 5 miles west of Susanville was creating its own weather as it built a Pyrocumulus head and a small fire tornado jumped across Highway 36. The Hog Fire started Saturday afternoon near Hog Flat Reservoir. After remapping crews downgraded the acreage to 8,000 acres with 5% containment. There are around 170 structures threatened as many evacuations remain in effect. Highway 44 and Highway 36 are closed. The fire has also destroyed a key fiber optic line, cutting off communications for much of Susanville and Cal-Fire Headquarters. A lot of the smoke seen in the Redding area has drifted from the Hog Fire.

Another fire broke out Monday in Lassen County. Located near Highway 139 and County Road A-2 south of Adin, the Gold Fire has burned about 5,500 acres so far with no containment. Two firefighters were injured at that blaze Monday afternoon and were flown to a hospital in Redding but there are no details on their conditions or what happened.
